A powerful message from a 2013 LEAP student.
LEAP catapults rising high school students into the legal education pipeline with the underlying aim to increase diversity in the legal profession. Under the leadership of "The Fund" which has been a long-time proponent for the education of Hispanic attorneys and law students throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, LEAP provides full scholarships to students interested in pursuing a legal education.
While many Hispanic youth show academic promise, our community suffers from dismal high school graduation rates and even lower undergraduate or graduate level achievement. To invest in the future academic success of Hispanic students, "The Fund" has created LEAP to help students set out for careers in law to address the lack of Hispanic legal professionals.
"The Fund" LEAP is being launched for promising Hispanic youth across the country:
Participants must be at least 14 years of and must not be more than 18 during the week of LEAP. Participants must be in the 9th through 12th grades. Applicants must submit two short essays on the prompts provided and one short essay explaining why they are deserving of a LEAP toward their future in the law and would like to participate in LEAP; two letters of recommendation; and a copy of the applicant’s most recent official academic transcript. LEAP scholarships include transportation to and from LEAP location; housing; meals; educational materials; and field trips expenses. LEAP applications will be available annually in February at www.HNBAFUND.org.
The 2015 LEAP summer program will be hosted in Houston, Texas, on June 21-28, 2015. LEAP participants are housed on a University campus for the one-week residential experience and will live in a protected campus environment with young attorneys, law students and college graduates serving as student-guides and mentors. The curriculum includes legal analysis training, immersion experience in local, state and federal courts, studying at a law school, public policy and rule of law lectures, field trips to agencies and a mock trial competition. LEAP will also provide students the opportunity to meet in person with national and international business leaders, lawyers in private practice, government lawyers, government agency officials, and state and federal judges, and law professors. The highlight of the academic component is LEAP Mock Trial Competition, which is held at the end of the LEAP session.
LEAP’s faculty and staff are comprised of members of the bar, current law students and current leaders in the legal field. HNBA members, judges, elected officials, law school professors and esteemed guest lecturers will also contribute meaningfully to the enriching experience.
Business leaders, law firms, law schools and private donors have joined forces to fulfill the promise of a diverse legal profession and career opportunities for Hispanic students. Together they have created a unique partnership to introduce Hispanic high school students to the United States legal system through targeted guidance with an emphasis on law and justice.
